Persuasive essay using social media tools
This English 1010 assignment will take students' persuasive essay writing skills to a new level using social media. It contains three main parts: research, writing, and sharing. Students will select a topic according to syllabus instructions and use the following tools in their work:
Research
Diigo is a social bookmarking tool that allows users to collect and organize what they find online. Users can highlight, bookmark, comment, make notes, and take pictures. They can share these findings with a group or keep them private. Bookmarks (and highlights, comments, etc.) are saved online and are accessible from anywhere, including mobile devices and tablets.
Students will join our class Diigo group by clicking on the icon at the left or by visiting http://www.diigo.com/list/macfam6/persuasive-essay. As they research online, they will bookmark, highlight, or comment on their findings and share them to our Diigo group.

Writing
MixedInk is a collaborative writing tool that allows students to "weave their best ideas into a single text." Students can rate and comment on each piece of their classmates' writing in order to produce a representative finished project. It keeps careful track of who wrote what so each student can be properly credited.

Sharing
Facebook not only connects friends all over the world, it connects causes, businesses, interest groups, and supporters.
Students will join a Facebook group of their choice that is connected to their topic. They will think of a question to pose to the group 'experts' relating to the research they have found. They will post a link to their mixedink individual essay and respond to any comments made. They will read several past wall posts to get a feel for whether the arguments made in their essay seem in line with how people generally feel. Students will email the instructor a .pdf of their Facebook wall that shows that the above requirements have been met.
